Stop calling evangelicals "fake Christians." They're the largest group of Christians in the US (mainline Protestants have only roughly half their numbers. They are the majority of American Christians, like it or not, which makes them the face of American Christianity.
I had a fascinating talk with an American Eastern Orthodox Christian, who made a compelling case that American evangelicalism is as much a new, distinctive offshoot of Christianity--that is, a different religion--as Mormonism.
I'm not sure I agree--in my opinion, what defines Mormonism as a different religion from Christianity is that they have a different primary holy text--but evangelicalism does look like a different religion from Catholicism/Eastern Orthodoxy.
At this point, though, that's more of a philosophical distinction than a practical one. The rest of us looking in from the outside can say, well, this looks almost like a different religion, but the only people who can ultimately define who counts as Christian are Christians.
But I don't mean that in terms of saying that any Christian who doesn't behave in the way they like is a "fake Christian." They don't get to dodge that responsibility so easily. I mean actually formally disavowing them.
