Dear 'The People',
It is 23:00 GMT on 29th March 2019 and the UK is still a full member of the European Union.
Don't worry, you still live in a democracy. It is however a heavily bruised version of democracy that is not well suited to handling the issue presented to it.
HM's Government has been unable to achieve its objective of delivering an orderly exit from the EU despite this being the 'Will of the People'.
As a representative democratic parliament all MPs have a duty to both act on behalf of their constituents, and ensure the prosperity of the Union (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland).
The 'instruction' provided to HM's Government to 'Leave the EU' did not provide enough clarity on how to proceed. There are too many interpretations of how to leave and no clear plan on what to do next.
Many have their own clear vision or understanding, yet there are so many conflicting options that mistakes have occurred.
It was a mistake to promise to hold a referendum without first assessing the needs of the Nations, obtaining consensus and ensuring there was a requirement to start a process that had little chance of not being divisive.
It was a mistake to trigger a process which created a limited timeline to achieve an ill defined outcome which had not gone through any form of scrutiny or consultation.
HM's Government performs impact assessments for every legislative change. It is inconceivable that this one did not have such assesments to guide policy.
It was a mistake to begin a series of negotiations based on 'Red Lines' that were not coordinated with the wider representatives of 'The People', not even within HM Government's own political party.
It was a mistake to hold a general election in order to make it easier to pass legislation and 'The Deal' without requiring a wider consensus of parliament.
It was a mistake for HM's Official Opposition to court a populist vote and put 'honouring the result of the referendum' in their manifesto.
It was a mistake to use parliamentary procedures to postpone 'Meaningful Votes' on 'The Deal' when it was clear it would not have enough support, especially within HM Government's own political party.
It was a mistake to be inflexible and only focus on gaining support from factions within one party, not through addressing the issues of those factions, but playing off their various worst case scenarios and threatening them as the likely alternative if they don't back 'The Deal'
It was a mistake to not consider a cross party process that would have provided a united front for obtaining a deal with the EU. Not abandoning the 'Red Lines' when it was clear they were incompatible with objectives relating to Northern Ireland created further divisions.
The UK has irrevocably harmed its international reputation, its prosperity from investment by overseas business and its internal political and social cohesion. The UK does not look United. The EU does look United.
We have less than two weeks to find a new solution. We can only hope that HM's Government does not repeat the mistakes of the past two years by continuing to push 'The Deal' rather than consider alternative solutions.
Unless the 'Indicative Vote' process can reveal a viable consensus that would both gain approval of parliament and the The European Council within the very limited time available, you need to consider the following:
Negotiate a long extension to the Article 50 process. This needs to not require a commitment to holding a referendum or general election as neither will resolve the issues until there is agreement for a confirmatory referendum, or parties change their policies before a GE
If you cannot get an extension without having such conditions, revoke article 50. We will then have all the time we need.
This does not mean the end of the process, but a reset.
The last two years have not been successful. If it is broken, fix it.
HM's Government has a department for managing this process. Each party in parliament has a shadow minister, representative or spokesperson for this process. Each devolved parliament has their own structures for this process.
Use this infrastructure and start talking to each other
Working together, establish what each representative group (of 'The People') wants and needs. Do not ignore the fact that the result of the referendum was marginal or that the reasons 'The People' voted for both simplistic 'leave' and 'remain' options are diverse and complex.
Put a new vision of how to proceed and what the end goal would be to parliament before opening new negotiations with the EU. The future relationship with our biggest trading partner is more important than scoring points.
It is essential to have the support of the devolved governments of the UK.
For this, the most difficult task needs to be completed, possibly more complex than leaving the EU.
We need to restore to devolved government of Northern Ireland. Get our own house in order before embarking on a break from our other Union.
HM's Government has other departments and they need to focus on other matters. However, these departments need to also look at the reasons 'The People' voted how they did in 2016 and 2017, no matter which way they voted.
If people voted for a strong NHS, deliver that. Don't wait for the mythical dividend from leaving the EU, invest now.
If people voted to control our borders, use the available options within EU rules and regulations to achieve what is needed. Reassure 'The People' that migration is essential to UK growth and prosperity. Don't allow fear of the unknown to drive public opinion.
If people voted for future trade deals, demonstrate how we are able to trade globally as part of the largest trading block in the world. Work with our EU partners to seek more opportunities.
If people voted for parliament to control our laws, demonstrate how the UK is involved in shaping EU regulations and legislation, how they benefit the UK. Dispel the myth that the EU is run by unelected bureaucrats.
If people voted to control our money, demonstrate how we are in charge of our monetary policy and have our own regulations.
Stop the spin. Don't use politically biased media to push an agenda that cannot be independently verified. Trust and use experts. Stop whipping votes just because you find it easier than winning the arguments.
Tackle climate change.
Invest in infrastructure.
Invest in services, especially the police.
Pay public servants what is necessary, especially teachers, doctors, nurses and fire services.
Support local governments.
Ensure those who can work get paid more than a 'living wage' without demonising those who can't work. Social security is what democracy is for.
When the country is ready, when parliament is aligned, when the EU is in agreement... Pass a new deal and put it to 'The People' for a confirmatory vote.
If approved, then trigger Article 50 again, we wouldn't need 2 years.
If not approved, rejoice that the hard work healing the divides was successful.
The EU is not perfect. It would be better if we had dedicated, motivated and engaged MEPs. Stop electing MEPs whose goals are to disrupt and dissolve the organisations they are elected to engage with.
Represent the UKs interests in the EU.
Advocate for EU investment in the UK
I have the greatest respect for @Femi_Sorry for his efforts to inform and educate.
I am impressed with @ChukaUmunna @ Anna_Soubry @heidiallen75 and the rest of @TheIndGroup for holding true to their principles.
I appreciate the efforts of @YvetteCooperMP, @hilarybennmp and many others on all sides of the political divide for improving the process.
