Alan makes a critical point. EFTA/EEA with a CU attached has always been the least silly (from a trade perspective) way to do this damn silly (from a trade perspective) thing.

The challenge has always been that it's insufficiently silly (from a trade perspective) for the ERG.
Elaboration before people start screaming: Trade arguments for Brexit were always terrible, but as campaigners tell us the referendum 'wasn't about trade'.

Therefore, it follows logically that if one is to deliver Brexit, the best way is one to minimizes trade impacts.
Also, I want to stress EEA/EFTA will be very complicated to set up and negotiate. I promise you. It's not a 'sign on the dotted line' thing. It will be hard, there will be many sticking points.

Issues like the Northern Ireland border will continue to cause headaches.
Common Market 2.0 isn't some magic wand the UK can wave and stop talking about this tomorrow. It's a model the UK can try to negotiate with the EU and the EFTA countries.

It just happens to be the model closest to the EU SM/CU without actually being inside it.
