Ever since I started reporting on #BahriaTown and the way it has been occupying lands of poor people in Malir district, Ive been getting responses that the story is fake and that the land under occupation of Bahria was never green, cultivated or taken away from poor.
My reply:
I have visited the area, called Kathore, many times and saw it changing myself. Here are a few pics that show how it used to look like:
And these:
These are old pictures. Today Bahria Town has blocked Langechi River stream which used to water the people’s agricultural lands. Now since the stream is blocked there is imminent threat of flash floods in the village. Bahria is pretty much above the water but villages are not.
Bahria has also cut mountains here to make more space for their bungalows, without any authority or getting an approval from environmental organisations.
Here is the pic which shows the truncated mountain on the right and under-construction houses on the left side:
Even today, dwellers here cultivate the land and grow their own grass for their livestock..
This is the latest picture of the fields:
Video bhi dekhlen agar ab bhi jhoot lag raha ho...farmers are growing wheat here:
Malir is very much an agrarian area. Even Malir’s vegetables are famous for that matter in Karachi.
However, much has changed since corporations tried to grab people’s lands and built their empires.
One such example, other than Bahria Town, is the Pepsi’s Aquafina factory which is not only illegaly built there but also pollutes environment. Here is my investigative report:
Are you convinced yet?!
Now about how these lands were taken away from people.
Yes, Bahria Town did offer money to a few strong people in the area but never paid them fully.
More importantly, those who refused to hand over their land were charged by police and anti-terrorism cases were registered.
Don’t believe this? Pls visit the area for thay because those people who have spent months in prison did not allow me to take their pictures for they are too scared now. Also ask for chacha Faiz Ahmed Gabol and his struggle till he breathed his last. RIP, chacha.
Btw, even authorities know that the Bahria Town’s occupied land belonged to the people and that’s precisely why Supreme Court accepted Rs460bn from Malil Riaz! Why else the man would offer this huge an amount to the court? Both the parties knew the land was occupied!
Truth is, friends, we have two systems of law in our country: one for the rich, another for the poor.
There are two kinds of truth: the kind revered by the poor, and the kind made-up by the rich to fool the masses. You decide which one you want to believe in. ✌🏽
