After a reasonably protracted battle, today we got the price of a prescription from $300/mo. down to $25 mo. There is clearly something wrong with a healthcare system where some people in theory pay $300 for something while other people pay $25. (1/3)
HOWEVER, note that this issue had NOTHING to do with the pharmaceutical manufacturer. This was all about the health insurance company’s willingness or unwillingness to pay—to meet their contractural obligations to their policyholder. (2/3)
Under Ocare, health insurers extracted the rent that every American was required to buy their product. In exchange, they were expected to cover things. Far too often, they find a way to weasel out, yet people knee-jerk reflexively blame drug manufacturers. (3/4)
There are many links in the drug supply chain—insurers, PBMs, etc. It’s the middlemen who create nothing yet extract from the system that we should focus on, not those who innovate and create these products that enhance our lives. (4/4)
