EU source describes ‘broad support’ amongst EU members for #Brexit flextension (The term appears to grate with some but this is how Donald Tusk is describing the proposal) BUT /1
A number of countries incl .. you guessed it - France .. demanding clear plan from Theresa May as to what she would use extension time for. They insist granting the UK a new #Brexit delay is not a given BUT /2
Hard to see how EU could say no if UK does what it asks. First and foremost prepare to take part in European Parliamentary elections in May (to avoid legitimacy of newly elected Parliament being called into question if UK still an EU member in July when it starts sitting) /3
Some EU countries still pursuing idea of getting some kind of gentleman’s (.. gentlewoman’s??) understanding from PM that UK will fulfill obligations as EU member state until the time it leaves - eg pay budget contributions, not block EU decision-making BUT /4
EU also working out alternative plans eg if UK were to try to block new EU budget - due for approval in coming months. I’m told the 27 remaining EU leaders can sign off on that budget and wait till UK leaves to ratify it « Not ideal but do-able » according to EU source /5
