The strange case of Ted Malloch.

The Prime Minister’s Director of Communications Robbie Gibb was heavily implicated in one of the worst editorial decisions made by the BBC in its history.

In November 2016, Malloch was plucked from obscurity and presented by the BBC as a serious candidate for a job in the Trump administration. (2/x)
In that interview with @EvanHD, Malloch claimed Theresa May was the first person Trump called after the election, and that he called her “my Maggie”. The claim seems to have been made up. (3/x)

Malloch became a favourite of the BBC, appearing on flagship programmes edited by Robbie Gibb. On January 12th 2017, he said Britain was now "at the front of the queue" for a trade deal with Trump. (4/x)
On January 22nd, 2017, Andrew Neil said he "understands" that Malloch will be named US Ambassador to the EU. (5/x)
On January 25th, 2017, Malloch predicted in an interview with @bbckamal that there might not be a European Union left to negotiate with and that the Euro would collapse within a year to 18 months. (6/x)
In a segment on This Week with Andrew Neil, Malloch said that a trade deal with the US would help a "swift hard Brexit", adding that he "helped to bring down the Soviet Union, so maybe there's another union that needs a little taming". (7/x)
Eventually in May 2017, the BBC admitted that Malloch had never been under consideration for a role in the US administration, long after he had been exposed by newspapers like the FT and Washington Post. (8/x)

To get a sense of just how crazy it was that Malloch was promoted by the BBC, watch this clip in which he says that the origins of the EU are "evil" before talking about Luciferianism and how "they" hate any nation that turns to God. (9/x)
There are serious questions to answer about why upholding the BBC's journalistic standards seemed to come second to creating a narrative of existential threat to the EU. (10/10)
PS: A good piece on this from @NickCohen4
