OK so real talk I design critical systems for a living.
if you design a spaceship like the Discovery? Networks will be isolated. There is no way critical systems of the spaceship will be in easy contact with the outside/subspace comms/etc.
1/
2. I'd expect a couple separate networks with full redundancy and encryption, and an extra layer of security against malicious attacks which makes it rather hard to hack an entire ship
2/
3. Critical systems are designed to be the VERY LAST THING to go: the cafeteria will stop serving meals/those fancy displays will turn themselves off/etc. before oxygen supply etc. gets affected
3/
4. One thing which we've done on ships for AT LEAST five centuries is separate compartments in the hull to prevent the ship from sinking from a small hole in said hole. I expect a large expensive spaceship would lose its systems in sections, not overall
4/
5. The other thing is redundancy. It generally (not always obv.) takes a chain of critical events for safety systems to fail--so not only, say, an alien probe crashing into the hull but also the motors being offline for repairs at the same time
5/
6. The other way to guarantee something is safe is by saying it will only fail very very infrequently and in specific conditions (like with a chance of 10 to the power of minus 19 or something)
6/
7. So anyway the upshot of this is that Starfleet needs a better class of starship designers because "unimaginably advanced technology" doesn't hide a couple really glaring flaws
If you enjoyed this thread I have a book with a gender-swapped Sherlock Holmes with Watson as grumpy AI who brews tea for a living, and it's up for the Hugo and Nebula!
