Interesting how many policy issues currently in the news - age verification today, but many others - could be largely solved by identity cards, but they’re never even mentioned. Most democracies worldwide manage to have them without descending to an Orwellian nightmare, you know.
I understand suspicion of ID cards in an age of “hostile environment” but arguably, people like the Windrush generation having ID cards, would have made it easier for them to prove normalised citizenship. It was a lack of documentation that facilitated the hostile environment.
And let's also think on the egalitarian aspect of IDs. Because let me tell you, as a former homeless person, the most vulnerable people don't drive, can't afford a passport, do not have a credit card or bills in their name and are excluded from a shedload of basic amenities.
