One of the best films on America's forever wars is new -- "Combat Obscura," directed by a veteran who was a cameraman for the Marines in Afghanistan. Here's a remarkable Q&A of the director, Miles Lagoze, by The Intercept's @camillembaker. theintercept.com/2019/04/07/com…
What's unique about the film is its footage -- raw scenes of soldiers killing, getting killed, getting high, abusing civilians, etc. There's no narration, just a montage of naked war the likes of which you've probably not seen. "It's supposed to be a poem," Lagoze says.
The film will tell you nothing about its maker -- Lagoze does not put himself at the center or even the side of his documentary. But in this Q&A, we learn a lot about why he made the film and what he thinks of the war in Afghanistan.
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are hardly spoken about, especially not in the election campaign for 2020. Lagoze, like many veterans I've spoken with, notes that ordinary Americans who do nothing but thank veterans for their service are complicit in what has happened.
