1) Where do people get the idea that Jason Kenney and the UCP are the strongest ballot choice in terms of Alberta’s economic future? A thread. #abpoli #vote2019
2) World price of oil has swung up / down from US$28 to more than $110/barrel in recent yrs, yet Kenney pins oil-producing AB economic struggles squarely on Notley. That’s an easy claim to make, & convenient that he need not prove how he or his Party would have done any better.
3) @jkenney has promised to kill the carbon tax, reduce corporate taxes, and still somehow balance the budget by saving money through efficiencies. And printing money, I suppose. #abvote #abpoli
4) @UCP pledged $1 billion for an "Aboriginal Opportunities Corporation", then changed it to $24 million over four years; a 97.6% reduction in a funding commitment to Indigenous peoples. Oops!
But hey, do a couple of decimal points really matter, after all?
5) Two years ago the NDP passed legislation limiting payday loan companies from charging up to 600% interest. Those companies are now courting @jkenney... and why won't he publicly say he'll keep the legislation in place? #abvote
6) @rachelnotley and the @albertandp have cut child poverty in half, giving Alberta the lowest rates in the country. I wonder if this measure holds any value for our political conservatives? If they consider it worth maintaining? #abvote
7) As noted by @trevortombe on April 4th, according to provincial debt to GDP ratios compiled by Royal Bank of Canada, AB has best balance sheet in the country.
How does that fit in the picture of AB economic calamity, caused by @albertaNDP , which @jkenney would save us from?
8) @jkenney announced a Grassroots Guarantee to ensure broad participation in his own Party regarding policy development, then changed his mind. Put out a Public Health Care Guarantee, then changed his mind.
Is this the steady hand at the tiller that Albertans want? #abvote
9) The @ucp would cut overtime pay for Alberta workers... When @jkenney says he wants to keep money in our pockets, he didn't actually mean most working Albertans, but the bosses and business owners. #abpoli #abVote
10) Are there savings to be found in the health care budget? No doubt there are, but the fat should be trimmed with a careful scalpel, not an indiscriminate axe. #abpoli #abvote
11) Education... now if all the parents of school-aged kids who want 35 kids in classrooms instead of 25 or 28, could please raise their hands? All the employers in 2025 eager to hire unconfident new workers churned through school w/o adequate instruction & supervision?
#abpoli
12) Carbon tax... my favorite. Highly-regarded Canadian economists, from the @EcofiscalCanada Commission, to faculty at U of C Schoolof Public Policy, to independent researchers across the country, all say that a price on carbon is the most cost-effective means to reduce GHGs.
13) The Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Shell, Suncor as well as Canada’s energy-intensive mining and cement industries agree with them. Businesses hate uncertainty, and would much rather have clear policies, numbers & costs to plan ahead.
Fossil fuels have costs. Plan for it.
13) Yet Kenney has named killing the carbon tax as Job #1 if he is elected, with the intention to roll back to a form of the PC government’s SGER plan; targeting a select few companies with a price on carbon while ignoring all other emitters throughout the rest of the AB economy.
14) @jkenney & @Alberta_UCP as credible, competent managers of Alberta's economy in 2019? I don't buy it. Not while the low-carbon transition is sorely needed & has already begun.
Any other evidence showing some #ucp claims are overstated, or poorly thought-out? #abvote #abpoli
