I'm sure you've heard this one before: "But China emits more C02 than the US!" In case you need some handy facts to respond to this essentially conservative argument that downplays need for US to reduce emissions, here you go 1/
Europe & US are by far--by many orders of magnitude--the largest historic emitters of CO2 and this historic CO2 continues to warm the atmosphere 2/
The US is on track to be the top oil and gas exporter in the world, due to the ongoing fracking boom. This oil and natural gas is burned elsewhere, and contributes to global warming 3/
China's emissions *are* increasing (as shown in the infographic above). However, China's exports are sold and consumed elsewhere. Globalized supply chains of production and consumption mean that the US' (& Europe's) carbon footprint has been effectively "offshored" 4/
In addition, the US remains the largest political obstacle to global cooperation regarding emissions reductions, in no small part do to the tremendous lobbying power of the fossil fuel industry 5/
Thus, shifting blame to more recently industrialized emerging powers is misleading & myopic; this doesn't mean China shouldn't reduce emissions -- all countries must -- but that climate change & longue durée historical development of capitalism are intimately related. 6/
