The Govt response to the petition “Halt brexit for a public inquiry”

...is one of the most disingenuous, unprofessional & propagandist pieces of writing I have seen in a long while:
Starting with the statement that Remain outspent Leave by £4m...

What on Earth does that have to do with legality or inquiry into process?

There’s only one reason for such bizarre whataboutery - propaganda. It has no place in a reply to this petition.
Then there’s the false equivalence of ‘both sides’ having received fines.

Only on one side is there serious & ongoing cases concerning criminality.
Then there is the “biggest democratic mandate” line.

That’s utter rubbish. A stronger mandate is secured by a larger margin. 17m v 16m means that if 1 in 17 leavers changed their minds, the result would flip (1 in ~32 changing minds makes it even) - hardly a colossal mandate.
If you think raw numbers make a mandate, you think a 50.3%:49.7% win in the US is a stronger mandate than a 90%:10% win in Slovenia.

Ridiculous.

And saying “largest ever” is also disingenuous, given population increases. (Bush tried this ‘largest ever mandate’ claim in 2004)
Finally: “The Government is committed to making sure the rules work, now and in the future.”

This is meaningless if Govt is not prepared to look retrospectively at rules breached.

That’s the basis of law enforcement.
And the notion that a 6-week period is all you get for catching criminality, or you miss out forever, is absurd and clearly inadequate.

Whenever criminality or severe bad practice is uncovered, it must be dealt with seriously.
