10 TWEET THREAD: WHY WE SHOULD IMPEACH

Elizabeth Warren is right; impeaching is the principled thing to do, the RIGHT thing to do. But contrary to what I keep hearing from other dems, it’s also logically and politically the right course. Here’s why:

1) It’s silly to worry about backlash from diehard Trump supporters. They are already giddy with love for him & think the Mueller report is a witch-hunt. But who cares? They aren’t going to change no matter what happens—they don’t even believe in facts—so why even factor them in?

2) As for more rational people, the more specific detail they learn about Trump’s crimes, the better. And nothing will bring that into the headlines better than impeachment. Most aren’t reading the report, or watching MSNBC. Action, not analysis, is what will get their attention.

3) Dems have said for weeks “We have to wait for the report.” We’ll, now we’ve got it, and even in redacted form it’s horrifying. If they don’t act, they are going to seem like political wimps at best, and liars at worst.

4) Aren’t we sick and tired of the democrats courting/being cautious with some mythical “middle-American” base they think they have to win back? We need to empower and impassion women, blacks, youth, and the members of the REAL democratic base.

5) It’s not an either/or between impeachment and “letting events [e.g. 14 other investigations, bringing Mueller before congress, etc] take their course.” If anything, if other investigations and hearings yield fruit they might just pull more rational GOP out of their moral fog.

6)As @Lawrence pointed out—it’s a myth that impeaching Bill Clinton hurt the democrats. They won the house and the senate. Right now, what’s protecting and empowering Trump is the Senate. Think about how different things would be if we had both chambers, even with him as POTUS.

7) What’s the worst that can happen? We behave like warriors for truth and justice rather than politicians and Trump gets away with it nonetheless? But isn’t “getting away with it” the norm for him anyway? What do we have to lose by putting up a fight????

8) To throw in a little historical proportion:Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about a blow job—while democrats now insist we need “more detail” from Mueller, etc. Our currently brain-melting normalization of REAL corruption is aided and abetted by this craziness.

9) What do we gain by waiting???? The Republicans aren’t going to praise us for acting cautiously. The nation isn’t going to be less “divided” (a myth, anyway.) It’s not going to win over voters we lost. The GOP extremists aren’t going to stop calling us witch-hunters.

10). What are we afraid of? Time to stop worrying about how Fox or Mitch McConnell will spin it. The redacted report already has given us more than enough. Time to stand up for fact and sanity against criminality and corruption—and not just a few pundits, but collectively.
