There has been a history of Gender Based Violence In Politics (#GBVIP) globally, we see a reflection of these instances in India and we need to talk about it — especially now during the #LokSabhaElections2019
Most female candidates and their supporters are routinely confronted with some form of gender-based intimidation, which persuades some women to abandon their campaigns. Aggression most commonly takes the form of verbal harassment during campaign meetings.
It is aimed at embarrassing women by questioning their competency or insulting them with accusations of being prostitutes.

In Sierra Leone, intimidation towards women candidates is more severe and sometimes involves threats of violence towards their husbands or supporters if they do not withdraw from the race. 1 woman during the 2008 election was threatened with rape unless she abandoned her campaign

#VAWIP diminishes women’s opportunities, creates serious barriers to entering politics and being represented in public positions of power and decision-making at all levels.
