A left-leaning centrist could win a general election in a landslide, but he can't win the Democratic primary
Here's a candidate who could win 70 million votes: pro abortion only up to 20 weeks, pro gay marriage, pro welfare, non interventionist, pro gun, pro immigration enforcement, pro free speech, critic of police brutality, not perceived as racist but not an SJW
I wouldn't vote for such a candidate because I disagree with a number of those positions, but I think that's basically where the mass of Americans are right now. Yet the Democrats would never nominate such a person. If they did, game over.

On my show today we discussed the death penalty. I said that I have come to support it, after opposing it for years. But there is one problem with the death penalty that still gives me pause and it’s a problem I never hear anyone bring up:
I’m concerned about the psychological and moral burden it has on the people tasked with administering it. I think it might be argued that execution is a job which no human is fit or able to perform without severe consequences to their soul and psyche.
In the death penalty doc “Into The Abyss,” the first interview is with a prison chaplain who you can tell has been utterly broken under the weight of attending so many executions and being exposed to so much death.

Well any credible list of the best WW2 generals would include Rommel. You do understand that when we say “best” we don’t mean “most morally upstanding,” right? This is about military prowess.
It’s pretty flabbergasting to see all these replies shouting “well would you put a NAZI on a list of best WW2 generals????” Uh, yes I would. As any person with any familiarity with the subject would.
I think Michael Jackson was a child abusing scumbag. But if I was to rank the best pop stars in history, it would be absurd to leave him off the list. He was a great performer and singer yet an awful wretch of a person. There’s a lot of that kind of dynamic throughout history.

It’s true that slavery obviously was a significant factor in the Civil War. It’s also true that the men who did the fighting on both sides didnt perceive themselves to be fighting over slavery, and wouldnt have fought if the leaders on either side framed it that way at the outset
For the northern soldier, it was a fight to preserve to Union. For the southern soldier, it was a fight to defend their homes. Shelby Foote tells a story of a confederate soldier captured by Yankees and asked why he’s fighting. “Because y’all are down here,” he said.
Robert E Lee’s reasons were much like that. After Sumpter, he knew the north would be marching into Virginia and blood would he shed on Virginia soil. He couldn’t bring himself to fight against his home and his family and his sons. He considered Virginia his “country.”
