Story of black joy, brought to you by @lizzo: Today driving to work on my predominantly white university campus I had my windows down & Lizzo’s “Good As Hell” blasting. I was stopped behind a bus loading passengers & saw a black woman grooving to my music.
We caught eyes, smiling, during the “I do my hair toss, check my nails” chorus so I pointed at her and sang “Baby how you doin?” Without missing a beat she smiled & sang back “Doin good as hell!”
I nearly burst into black joy tears at this random, perfect little moment as the bus moved & I drove off. Thank you @lizzo for creating some unexpected #BlackGirlMagic in my life today.

Holy shit. Just accidentally binged @ramy on @hulu. It was so fucking good yall. Such complex, interesting narratives; at times very uncomfortable or dark, but somehow consistently amusing & humorously real.
It reminds me a little of Master of None, but with more depth? It’s just gets more powerful with every episode. I did not mean to watch it in one day but I did. I fucking did.
Highly recommend for children of immigrants & millennials raised in religious households. It’s not my story but Lord if I didn’t feel some of those episodes in my bones.

What I’m saying is: Go watch #Ramy.

Me e-mailing every editor who has accepted my work but not published it yet to confirm publication dates for my tenure file CV.
Look, there is one book chapter that I wrote in 2015 and the last I heard (in Jan 2018) it was supposed to be published in Oct 2018. It’s April 2019 & I haven’t heard from the editors in over a year so...
I currently have 5 articles/chapters/essays accepted & 5 more under review. Only 4 of these pieces were submitted in 2018 or 2019, the rest have been languishing in academic publishing purgatory for years. Remember kids: don’t rely on any single publication for tenure.

I’ve had multiple ppl tell me that if I don’t get tenure I have a lawsuit on my hands & yet a part of me is still like: Racism & sexism are wild & I trust no white man’s “meritocracy”. I’ll feel confident I have tenure when I see the paperwork that says so & not a second sooner.
There are too many horror stories of talented, accomplished women of color being denied tenure, particularly at elite universities. There are too many stories of people working themselves into health crises & strained relationships for 6 yrs only to be told no.
You can’t ask me to put faith in a system that has harmed & failed so many people I admire. I will believe it when I see it. And in the meantime, I’ll be spending this summer preparing myself for what I do if it’s a no.

1. Medieval studies originated in a racist, sexist, colonizing institutional context in the long nineteenth century. We must first openly name this problem and identify the origins and Systemic problems. We might even want to make somqe apologies and restrictions >
2. We must never force minoritized scholars carry the burden of this work or expect them to do it instead or in addition to old school medieval studies. Your advanced degrees mean you are smart and can learn new things. Start educating yourself .
3. We need to change how we teach. Decolonize your curricula. Change your language requirements. Incorporate an honest critical reading of your racist academic "grandparents" into the framing of your courses.

There is a class of white people who have always been vocal that they believe America belongs to them and they don't want the rest of us here. The question is why the supposedly "good white people" don't actually wanna talk about that.
The refrain we hear from the "good white people" all the time is "there are more of us than there are of them". Okay. So where y'all at? Where are the conversations? Where are the talk shows and the podcasts? Where is the actual resistance against white supremacy?
I wanna be clear what I'm talking about right now. Lots of white people want to talk to *me* about racism and white supremacy. Mostly because they want me to explain to them how to think about it and give them the answers on how to engage with it.

Yuan-ti are an old foe in the FR setting. Real old. like, pre-humans old. They're the most successful and longest lasting creation of the Sarrukh. The Sarrukh being a creator race, and more specifically, the creators of all the scaled races like the Yuan-ti, Lizardfolk, and more!
The Yuan-ti were unique among their creations, having the capability to turn mammalian creatures, like humans and elves, into "Purebloods", and ironic term because they are the lowest caste in Yuan-ti society. Often called "corrupt", this is a feature of the Yuan-ti, not a bug.

On Tues I engaged in free speech activism at my own university, Wilfrid Laurier. The pic below shows me outside the door of the event. The tweets in this thread are an account of what transpired. My hope is that other tenured profs & bold students might employ this model. 1/14
Via posters around campus and an email alert, I was informed that faculty from one of Laurier’s programs were holding a forum for students at which the necessity of raising the minimum wage to $15 would be promoted.

What especially caught my attention was that some of their advertising material stated students would be have the opportunity to be trained as activists against the Ontario Progressive Conservative government (the “Doug Ford government”).

This narrative about Black voters "saving" Alabama would imply that majority of white voters--the majority of people in the state--wanted to be "saved" from Moore. They didn't. Black voters protected themselves
It's a bit problematic to frame AL election results as Black people "saving AL" when they were actually protecting themselves by pushing back against systemic racism within their state
"Black people saved Alabama!"

Who did they save Alabama from? Who was putting AL in harm's way that it needed to be saved & why?
