Meanwhile IBM is frantically trying to unwind the purchase on the news that RedHat employs people who have tattoos.
I don't practice what I preach. I once gave @akelman a custom branding iron labeled "AWS" to help with his corporate branding initiatives.

Millennial consumers are increasingly expecting brands to act as a force for good and take a world view which rejects racism. Instead, this brand is perpetuating racism by privileging the consumers who shout a lot rather than doing the right thing

There's a great graph in the paper by Cech and Pham. This is the "workplace experience" of employees in US based STEM federal agencies. 3 = positive, 2 = neutral, 1 = negative. LGBTQ+ have a systematically worse of experience. #lgbtSTEM

Let’s talk about race and gender bias in hiring. It’s a topic where many well-meaning people have faulty thinking.

1. Your system can be biased, even when you are not.

2. We need to decouple bias from morality. Bias is not a moral failing any more than writing a bug in code is.
3. You ARE biased. We all are. It’s part of being human. This is why scientists have systems for reducing bias in studies.

One more time: nobody is calling you a racist or a sexist. Ok?

Once we removal moral connotations from discussions about bias, we can think scientifically.
4. A fair hiring process does not require any group to receive special treatment.

But, and this is what trips people up:

5. It’s impossible to DESIGN a fair process without talking about underrepresented groups.

Why? To reduce bias, you have to identify and think hard about it

Hey @alexisohanian, you *likely* won't remember this, but we met at a Super Bowl party in Harlem in 2011. Random? YES. I asked for your help wiping spilled beer off my back. You obliged, and we chatted for a minute. I was a flight attendant then, but now I'm in tech. 1/10
Meeting you,@alexisohanian, and @hueypriest at that party was one part of the catalyst that got me into the tech industry. I met REAL people who built an awesome thing that people LOVED. You brought tech into a reality for me in a way that my non-famous nerd friends did not. 2/10
I quit being a flight attendant to attend a full-stack bootcamp a few years after that Super Bowl party, and am now doing what I love as a woman in #tech. @alexisohanian, you helped inspire me, and I am hoping you're willing to inspire more #womenintech 3/10

So I wanted to close tonight by talking a bit about how I got involved in #diversity #equity #inclusion efforts in #STEM and otherwise, and some general considerations for getting involved, especially as a white, hetero, cisgender individual.
If you had told me 20 years ago that I would be involved, I'm not sure I would have believed you. I was a pretty ignorant and inherently biased individual bc of where and how I grew up. But luckily people can grow. A couple things happened that changed my path.
Gainesville and UF were a huge part of it. I've lived in other colleges and cities, but it's been different here. Even with all their problems, the town & university have more diversity than anywhere I'd been & people were openly discussing big important related issues together.

THREAD. Balanced teams vs. "diversity".

Some people are confused about whether, at @Atlassian, we've shifted our focus from creating intersectional justice and equitabe opportunities for everyone, with a spotlight on those who are underrepresented in tech.

That's easy: NOPE.
We're moving away from *language* that is outdated and a *barrier* to the progress we want to see. Our 2018 State of Diversity report (atlassian.com/diversity/surv…) showed us two problems with the word "diversity" (on top of other issues holding back #diversity & #belonging in tech).
1. People overwhelmingly associated the word with underrepresented or minority groups.
2. The minorities people associated with "diversity" with were gender and racial minorities.

Let's unpack why this is problemmatic af, A LESSON.
