Breaking: Florida senate passes bill requiring those with past felony convictions to pay all restitution, fines & fees before becoming eligible to vote. This is modern day poll tax undermining historic ballot initiative that could block over 500,000 people from the ballot box
Amendment 4 was passed by 64% of Florida voters & was largest expansion of voting rights since Voting Rights Act. Now it’s been gutted by GOP legislature. Outrageous attack on democracy & will of the people
Florida's racist Jim Crow era felon disenfranchisement law blocked 1 in 10 from voting, incl 1 in 5 African Americans. Ballot initiative repealing it was huge victory for voting rights. Now instead of following will of voters, FL GOP suppressing votes motherjones.com/politics/2018/…

Breaking: SCOTUS rules VA legislature doesn't have standing to challenge lower court decision striking down state legislative districts as racial gerrymandering. 5-4 decision by RBG. This is victory for voting rights & boosts chances Dems will retake VA legislature in 2019
Interestingly enough, Tom Hofeller, GOP gerrymandering mastermind behind census citizenship question, was hired by VA GOP House to defend racially gerrymandered maps that SCOTUS just declined to put back in place motherjones.com/politics/2019/…
In 2018 federal court ruled 11 VA state house districts were racially gerrymandered to benefit GOP. SCOTUS refused to reinstate that map today, which means there will be fairer districts in 2019 elections, boosting Dems chances of retaking VA legislature motherjones.com/politics/2019/…

i’m at the northside library for the one millionth forum with hudson and galvin, candidates for the 57th district delegate seat. the primary can’t come soon enough.
got to the library as the candidates forum for VA’s 25th district was wrapping up and ooooof ben hixon said “there’s only so much money to go around,” re: making 4 year college more affordable. if you can’t dream big while campaigning, you’re not even gonna try in office.
even when they’re ALMOST THERE with a progressive idea, so many dems miss the mark. amy laufer, while talking about criminal justice reform, was talking about the importance of giving people their vote back, but said “if you’ve paid your fines, you deserve your voice back.”
