honestly, was waiting for Trump to say/tweet something in coming days that pulls rug out from under Bolton on Iran escalation, 1/
which somehow in the last day seems to have subsided a bit.
(that’s my own very subjective sense.)
Was struck by Pompeo’s very, very measured words and tone on Iran issues both Baghdad and London. Very measured, pragmatic. 4/
Pompeo generally does what he thinks Trump wants.
what’s the what. there seems to have been some threat the US was aware of, big effort to send deterrence message to Iran and proxies & Iraq.
Bolton may not be best messenger for that deterrent message, given his credibility issues, & how he is perceived to be escalating
But somehow in the last 24-36 hours, US has kind of toned it down.
Trump’s team going nuts finding ways to impose economic misery on Iran. But got sense, incl. from Pompeo tone past cpl days,
that Pompeo understands Trump goal is definitely to avoid a war, & that he was trying to cool it. & while Trump team obsessed with demo’ing
how much pain they have inflicted, contra the pro jcpoa experts, that honestly, trump does not give AF. he may pull rug out when he is ready
