I definitely don’t think this is the last word in sustainability for independent OSS developers, but am glad to see Github getting into it pretty seriously.

They’ve become indispensable technical infrastructure and are in a good place to leverage that.
OSS development is B2B professional services work and, while I think that allowing people to pay their rent with well-loved projects through easily sourced voluntary donations is a darn sight better than not receiving money, think that ultimately someone needs to sell a CTO/etc.

The thing which is most amusing for me is the part where a payment processor has their bank freeze funds belonging to the exchange then pay them out on bank drafts (checks), which *no bank in Canada was willing to touch.*

(An eminently sensible call!)

I think:

* this has the ring of truth to me with regards to the vast majority of shops
* (I would broaden observation from deploys into internal tools generally)
* Stripe’s tooling on this specific issue is pretty good and has come a long way in last 2 years.

We have a lot of services of varying blast radii. I remember once having to coordinate deploys of middle-of-list services with other engineers; we now have a web interface which mostly obsoleted that.

90% less minutes per deploy (for me).
That said: if you’re at a company with 40+ engineers and, let’s pick a small minimum bound, 5% of your engineers aren’t full-time dedicated to internal tooling, that seems to be the biggest free lunch in the history of free lunches.

Last week I spent a couple of days writing code @stripe. We think about and invest a lot in our internal developer experience. Having spent >10 yrs at Google I like to think I have a high bar. But last week's experience was substantially better than anything I've seen at scale.
Examples: every engineer has their own devbox with a realistic environment provisioned by tools; we built a static typechecker for #Ruby and it has a beautifully intuitive syntax and finds real problems quickly. Try it: sorbet.run more:
We embrace and extend the best tools in the industry - we've built on top of @code as our main editor over the last year and use community extensions + some of our own to streamline key use cases - easy to run unit tests inline, a debugger that actually works, etc

A few weeks ago, I wrote about a $20,243 bike crash bill from Zuckerberg San Francisco General.

In light of my story, the hospital is reducing that bill to $200.
