I've reviewed tens of thousands of job applications for @podia and previous companies. Here are some of my tips for people who are applying for a new job:
It's really important that you convey enthusiasm for the job/company. I want to know the specific reasons why we caught your eye and what you like about us. 🙌
This may sound petty, but it's really important that you don't have any typos, spelling mistakes, and grammar mistakes. We get hundreds of applications and it's just one of those red flags. Proofread everything.
If it looks like you copy and pasted your application responses, then you probably did and it's not going to stand out. I understand that it's tough to write fresh responses for every application, but it really does show when you do.
Convey your personality. When reviewing hundreds of applications, you need to stand out from the crowd. Cracking a joke or even tossing in an emoji here and there will help break up the sea of text.
More is actually more when responding to questions. If I see a one-line response to a question where other people are writing several sentences or even paragraphs, I'm likely going to think you're not taking it seriously. ✍️
If we're asking a question, it's because we want to know the answer. Sometimes I see people skirt around the question and that doesn't allow us to take your application seriously.
Avoid using any generic or jargon-heavy language. I know writing isn't everyone's forte, but I’d rather you write like you speak, rather than use language you'd see in Office Space.
Record a video. 📽️ To be honest, only about one in two hundred people do this and it always stands out. It doesn't automatically mean you'll get to the next round, but I will take the time to watch it (just keep it under 3 minutes). 😉
Re-applying to a company? Make sure to re-write your application from scratch. You didn't make it the last time, so you'll want to do something different. A video about why you're re-applying and what's new with you always helps.
I hope this doesn't sound snooty. I just really want to help people who are looking for jobs. Spending more time on your application really does help! Start by being a bit more selective with who you're applying to, as that will allow you to spend more time on each application.
