1. On China Trade Negotiations
This is one hell of a negotiation Trump is engaged in, probably the toughest one of his career. Don't get hung up on trade deficit which is just a slogan. For the heart of the matter, see this thread I wrote a year ago:
2. China is not going to mend its ways easily. They benefit too much from the devious ways they deal with their international trading partners. Trade negotiations seem to have hit an impasse.

3. Many Trump opponents will blame Trump for precipitating a trade war with China which will hurt America too. But the truth is someone has to confront China, which has been allowed to defraud the rest of the world through unfair and unethical trading practices for far too long.
4. This was never going to be easy. China wants to play nice with Trump by making verbal promises they have no intention of keeping, based on their track record. They always play Western leaders for fools because they know Western leaders are suckers for deal announcements.
5. Trump admin insists on hard and fast terms which are in writing and implemented through written laws and regulations, not just word-of-mouth promises. The moment things were put in black and white, China went back on everything they had agreed to but had no intention of doing.
6. That is what this is all about. See this:
7. Thank God we have Trump in the White House to deal with China. I cannot imagine any of the 2016 presidential contenders, in either party, having the guts and the smarts to handle China -- a China that must be handled equitably but firmly NOW.
8. If Americans have to make some sacrifices to cut some of the trade chords with China, I hope we do. Not doing so will have far worse consequences down the road.
9. “We were getting very close to a deal, then they started to renegotiate the deal. We can’t have that. We can’t have that,” Trump said at an event at the White House.
10. Trump said if the two sides cannot make a deal, the U.S. would go back to manufacturing products that China now makes. “It’ll be the old-fashioned way, the way we used to do it: We made our own product.”

Someone has to show China that U.S. is willing to do what it takes.
11. A lot of people in high and responsible positions, across the political spectrum, know Trump is doing God's work here when it comes to China. That is why you don't hear much criticism from Democrats on this, and even media reports it pretty much straight. We should be proud.
12. Let's hang in there and support the President to win this one, no matter what it takes, for all of us. Thank you Democratic leaders and thank you media mavens for recognizing just this once that politics must stop at the water's edge. Let's do this together.

The End.
'... there is absolutely no need to rush ...' is the right move.

China figures they can wait Trump out in the hope they just might get a weaker Dem president to deal with after 2020 election. Wrong!

China will only see the light of day after they lose.
Far better to win a trade war with China now by showing China that America can thrive without China trade, whereas converse is less true.

Far better to win a trade war now than let China build its economic might on America's back for the inevitable shooting war down the road.
NY Times Knows How To Report Straight

This article on China trade is a good example. This is why I don't believe most reporters are irredeemably liberal now. They are not. They are by and large smart. They know what will be rewarded and they adapt.
