Brief micro-thread on what's "canon" for me, my students and my research assistants. Anybody who has ever worked with me has learned at the very least the following techniques/software. <begin micro-thread>
To read, synthesize and write, most of my students and RAs learn

1) AIC content extraction (quick skim read)
2) Conceptual Synthesis Excel Dump (citation/readings organization)
3) Citation tracing until reaching conceptual saturation
4) Forward/backward citation tracing.
My students and RAs learn different ways of summarizing their readings:

1) Rhetorical precis raulpacheco.org/2016/10/using-…
2) Synthetic notes raulpacheco.org/2017/05/writin…
3) Memoranda raulpacheco.org/2016/07/writin…

They also learn how to write
1) a literature review
2) annotated bibliography
I encourage my graduate students to stay on top of the literature using an #AICCSED combo raulpacheco.org/2017/12/carvin…

My literature review process - raulpacheco.org/2017/04/how-to…

My annotated bibliography process - raulpacheco.org/2017/04/writin…

NOT ALL my stds/RAs have an Everything Notebook
I teach my students/RAs 3 methods of note-taking, on top of using Evernote as a digital notebook:

1) w/ an Everything Notebook raulpacheco.org/2018/12/note-t…
2) w/ Cornell Notes raulpacheco.org/2018/12/note-t…
3) w/ Index Cards raulpacheco.org/2018/11/note-t…
My post on Evernote is old raulpacheco.org/2014/08/using-… but may be of interest.

ALL my students and RAs have struggled with time management and organization. I shared how *I* work on a daily basis, but encouraged them to develop their own routine raulpacheco.org/2018/11/develo…
For citation management I use Mendeley raulpacheco.org/2018/12/a-brie… for qualitative analysis I have used Atlas.ti, N*Vivo, Dedoose and lately, MAXQDA. For quantitative analysis I use STATA (and a bit of R). For geographical information systems, ArcGIS and QGIS (clunky but open source)
For project and dissertation/thesis management: I'm super old school. I tried Slack, Trello, M$ Project, etc. and I ended up simply teaching my RAs/students to do old-fashioned Gantt Charts raulpacheco.org/2018/10/planni…
One key element of thesis management for me is the Dissertation Two Pager (DTP) raulpacheco.org/2018/08/the-di…

Forcing my students to go through the thinking process of revising their DTP over the course of their degree at least 4 times (Masters) and 6-8 times (PhD) is helpful to them.
Within my lab, my students and RAs produce a range of scholarly outputs, from a simple bank of rhetorical precis, to annotated bibliographies, to full-fledged literature reviews, to full papers. One thing I like to do is to ensure we all share stuff on Dropbox/Box/OneDrive.
For me, having this basic "canonical guide" to what a student/research assistant can/should expect to learn with me (on top of project/time/research management skills) is also helpful as I write my book and as I prepare to do a workshop at University of California Davis. </fin>
