So just a couple things:
First, a big hug to those of you who have offered your kind words, amplified this for thousands to read, and shared your own stories of sexual trauma, abortion, and ways in which you’re working to combat this attack on women. I see you. And I’m with you.
Second, for those sliding into my DMs questioning my motivation for sharing my story, expressing disbelief at the authenticity, and even comparing me to Jussie Smollett 🤨 I’m sorry that in some way you are hurting inside. I’m just a mom with no SoundCloud for y’all to download..
And not a tv contract to renegotiate in sight. In no way do I profit from telling a story that is uncomfortable, and one I’m not particularly proud of. I shared because I think it’s important that people realize how repressive ideologies are not just dangerous because they force
Women into having children they are incapable, unwilling, or unable to care for, but because they embolden others to force their beliefs on complete strangers, and in doing so continue the cycle of trauma that can have deadly consequences.
I’m an adult who had consensual sex within the confines of my marriage and made a choice that was in the best interest of me and my family. Had I been a teenager who was raped and experienced the same outrageous treatment from a cashier I may not have survived the shame.
Third, to all women, no matter the circumstances or the uphill battle we fight for equal rights and bodily autonomy, please have the confidence to know that you, and you alone, know what is best for you. No man, no woman, no politician, should ever make you disbelieve that.
It is your right to be safe and to seek all resources available to you should you find yourself in a moment of crisis. @PPact is a great resource. Start there.
And lastly, to the lovely people of Alabama, register to vote and then actually show up at the polls. While we may have chosen not to live in AL nor spend our money there, I will support all candidates who are determined to be more representative of the broader population.
Maybe my first trip back to Alabama will be to knock some doors and volunteer for some local candidates. Maybe, just maybe, we can all heal together. Sending love from my family to all of yours. ❤️
