Bytedance bought Chinese owned Music.ly which promoted videos of underage users lip syncing to sexually suggestive acts. Surprise.... users have prurient interests..and Bytedance is a publisher who profits from ads based on popularity. scmp.com/tech/start-ups…
Music.ly was hammered by the FTC for being completely blind to the impact of underage soft porn..on children, even though they use "artificial intelligence" to select what customers want. nytimes.com/2019/02/27/tec…
This creates the classic dilemma of giving people what they want (porn) versus what is considered appropriate by experience editors versus advertising click sales. Or is all this controversy just fake news? techcrunch.com/2018/12/19/tik…
In addition to mass control of what their population can see, Chinese business has brutal tactics in dirty tricks, manipulation of artificial intelligence and algorthms used by online businesses.
So when a massive online publisher says they have no responsibility for the content, yet manipulates, censors, promotes and monetizes that same content. Content that promotes and spreads unhealthy content? Who is to blame? newyorker.com/news/news-desk…
