What do women want career-wise as they become mothers? 👩‍👧‍👦

I've gathered a few surveys related to this question. (1/n)
(2/n) Pew research has asked in 3 surveys about mothers' ideal situation in work/life-balance.

Consistently, nearly half say that they prefer part time work.

The rest of the half is roughly equally split between preferring full time and preferring no work at all (stay at home).
(3/n) So there is definitely great variety. Some women prefer working full time, but most say that their ideal situation is less than full time, either part time or stay at home.
(4/n) Research has discovered that one of the major causes of the median difference in men's and women's earnings arise as a result of family formation. This certainly makes sense if many (if not most) women become part time paid workers as a result of having children.
(5/n) A survey from TheBump finds that

- 69% of moms feel pressure to work because of the necessary added income.
- Most say that staying at home is a financial luxury (although that doesn't necessarily suggest they prefer staying at home)

(6/n) Perhaps more surprising, they find that

- 36% of mothers sometimes felt resentment towards their partners for not earning enough money for them to be able to stay home.

- Roughly half say they would be more happy if they didn't work (paid work, that is).
(7/n) As I said, there is definitely some variability here, with 1 in 5 stay-at-home mothers saying they would be more happy to work outside the home. Is that a big or a small portion? That's for you to decide.
(8/n) In general, earning potential in men is considered fairly important.

Another Pew poll found that 71% of women said that being able to support a family financially is very important for a man to be a good husband/partner.

(Same % of men, but this is about women's views)
(9/n) That could be for many reasons but it certainly makes rational sense, when/if you get children, if your ideal situation is to work less than full time outside the home.

I'm sure there is much more to say on this topic (Feel welcome to share thoughts!). Thanks for reading.
