(1/5) THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF INNOVATION IN THE UNITED STATES

Men are substantially overrepresented among innovators, with women representing just about 12% overall.

One reason is that most innovation comes from engineering and technology which are male-dominated fields.
(2/5) The vast majority of innovation is done by whites and asians. Hispanic and black people are substantially underrepresented among innovators.

Some immigrant groups innovate at disproportionately high rates including Europeans, East Asians and Indians.
(3/5) The mean age of innovation is between 40 and 50 years old, but with large variation. Men tend to innovate slightly later than women.
(4/5) Innovation happens most often in large and older companies. This may be counterintuitive to be people who think of small companies as the engines of innovations.

However, probably also a survivorship bias. Older and larger companies are those that have been successful.
