1. Can I explain all the ways this is bullshit?
2. So here's the situation: Turning Points USA hires Kyle Kashuv to be poster boy, a valuable asset since he's a Parkland shooting survivor. But it turns out there is a long record of Kashuv using n-word & other slurs so TPUSA cuts him lose.
3. So Kashuv was hired & promoted mainly for something that happened to him as a teen, to be part of a youth organization said to be the voice of young conservatives, but we're told we can't judge him for his behavior at age 16.
4. Further, it's ridiculous to treat this event in isolation. Turning Points USA has a long history of hiring people who use n-word & other expression of anti-Black racism. So this isn't just about one 16 year old kid but an organization.
5. Also: Soave says we shouldn't judge the 16 year old Kashuv for using the n-word but he's built an entire career upbraiding slightly older teens (17 plus) for being PC or going to far left politically.
6. The deeper problem is that Soave's argument involves a normalization of teen use of ethnic slurs. A story: a friend has a 10-year old son, who heard a classmate use slur. Son politely but firmly criticized. By Soave's standard how can we praise that son?
7. When I was in high school, some kids dropped the n-word (& other slurs) like they were in a Tarantino movie. It was upsetting to me, moreso to the (few) black kids. Does Soave's empathy extend to non-white kids who hear racial slurs or just to white kids who use them?
8. Imagine thinking its a grave injustice that a kid who used the n-word & joined an organization well known for employing racists (Turning Points USA) doesn't get into Harvard. I live in a world far worse things happen to far better kids.
9. Finally I would question the premise that Kashuv is being destroyed by this. Trump is president & Ralph Northam is governor. Kashuv will be fine. In 10 years he'll be an editor at Reason with a Koch grant to write a book on the glories of the n-word.
