Prediction: Trump is going to steal the 2020 election and the entire Republican Party, including Bill Barr and Mitt Romney, will be totally cool with it. In fact, they'll even give him an assist.
All of this insanity could be brought to a halt if four GOP senators chose to caucus with the Democrats. That's it. All it takes is four people to do what virtually every Republican in DC knows should be done. But they will never do it.
And let's be clear about why they won't do it. Because they are scared to death (like, literally) of what their own party's base will do if they try to hold Trump accountable.
There are worse ways to emplot the history of the GOP than as a 50+ year old Frankenstein's monster of reactionary white male identity politics that the party elites mined for votes but which they thought they could keep in control, but which now threatens to devour the nation.
The GOP nominated and then supported a candidate who publicly threatened his opponent with "2nd Amendment" remedies, and who refused to say he'd accept the results of the election if he lost. This was all out in the open BEFORE November 2016.
All of the 2016 GOP handwringing by Graham, Cruz, Rubio, etc. means NOTHING right now...because they are too cowardly to stand up for what they know full well is right.
They tell themselves Trump is bad, but much better than "socialism" or whatever McCarthyite boogieman they cook up to justify their toadlicking cowardice...but ultimately, there is no difference between them and him.
I'm a historian and historians know better than to make predictions. I hope I'm wrong. But I'm also a citizen and I am righteously pissed at what our so-called leaders who sanctimoniously cite The Federalist Papers are doing...or more accurately, not doing.

OMG...this Seb Gorka video from today is just the perfect, absurdist cherry to plop on top of this authoritarian milkshake.
He literally invoked the specter of Trump "unleashing the kraken" with a straight face. When they finally break the frame and admit that this has all been a simulation, I can't wait to grab a beer with the guy who's been playing Gorka. He's very skilled.
