I am covering the KKK rally in Dayton, OH today as well, this line of thinking mirrors my own. Stay tuned for lots of KKK tweets.
The streets are very very very empty ahead of the KKK rally.
EMT wearing a bulletproof vest and the mass casualty room is here.
Directions for KKK rally/counter rally. Dayton as a city is super organized on this. I did a lap around the perimeter with @FordFischer and it's pretty much political convention level security. Reminds me of DNC/Philadelphia and RNC/Cleveland with the double fence perimeter
Also, @cityofdayton: your zoning board sucks. Whoever approved the boom boxes on the street blasting advertisements at people needs to be fired.
Black city resident shows up "Hey what time is this stuff starting?"

@FordFischer tells him 1pm

"see, we already out here, we ready."

Its 10am.
I'm seeing a LOT of interracial couples walking towards the KKK rally with protest signs and I'm really enjoying it.
There are a TON of bike cops floating around the Dayton OH perimeter. Also this guy.
Micah Naziri is here to face off with the KKK and brought his long gun on a sling. He's wearing a red hat that says "make racists afraid again"
Anti-KKK protester hears Ride of the Valkyries come on @NPR.

"Where they at? They're playing their music. Where they at?"
"This Jew will replace you!" -- a reference to the Charlottesville neo-nazi chant "Jews will not replace us."
LARGE group of people wearing red shirts and carrying red flags have arrived in area designated by police for anti-KKK protesters. One man with a megaphone shouting the anticapitalist chant. Some have covered their faces with bandanas, but not seeing any weapons at this moment
Police on horseback hanging out in an alleyway within eyeshot of protesters
This is probably the funniest sign at the counter-protest outside the KKK rally in Dayton, OH.
An antifa flag has made an appearance.
Another man legally open-carrying a long gun here at the KKK rally and counter-protest in Dayton OH
A look at the scene right now, 22 minutes before the KKK is due to arrive.
A hammer and sickle flag has also made an appearance
The KKK is so far away I can't really get a photo of them. They are carrying the Confederate battle flag, a handmade banner with KKK and a couple other words scrawled on it, the American flag, and the red KKK flag.
The KKK has arrived and the crowd is now hanging out at the fence
Another funny protest sign: "I should be at home watching anime and smoking weed but instead I have to YELL AT RACISTS."
The KKK showed up without their historical white outfits, which some anti-KKK protesters have told me is a big disappointment.

I count like six. But I can't see very well.
Panorama of the anti-KKK protesters and the ten members of the KKK that actually showed up, side by side.
Police walk by with water and snacks. Protester shouts: "Is that peanuts?? I want peanuts!! Throw me some peanuts."
Police hanging out, keeping an eye on things. Mood: calm.
Another group has shown up
LOTS and LOTS of people open-carrying (legal under Ohio law) here.
Extremely brief confrontation as a protester dressed in all black throws water on another protester after the first protester says "Y'all in black aren't from around here, I'm from here, you don't belong here."
Anti-KKK crowd size has increased since I last tweeted it. Here's a portion of it.
Here are the two best images I have of the KKK side of this rally. Everybody wave hello to the racists!
I counted again, got ten people. For information on crowd count, refer to local news, which... I think one station was able to get inside the police barricade. But the idiot PIO at @DaytonPolice failed to send credentialing information to national press.

@DaytonPolice You had to request permission to go inside 48 hours ahead of time, and they failed so miserably at spreading that information that only one station is inside. I can't see their call letters either, so good luck with that.
This is disinformation. This crowd is very calm and very peaceful. And so are the police here. I've seen nothing but respectful police-community interavtion so far.

Black panthers leaving together "we came in peace, we leave in peace"
Counter-protesters go through the police decontamination showers to cool off after the protest
Everybody say hello to the beautiful counter-KKK protest puppy (8 months old)
Black panthers are having some success in getting people to leave (permit ends 3pm local time. It's 2:53pm)
They're either going on a march or leaving altogether. I'm following.
Protesters cooling off
Group of protesters stopped to wait for a walk signal. Jefferson & Third.
It's over, 结束了。 Police starting to leave too. I am headed off as well, first to file my package, then to go find some ICE CREAM. thank you all very much for joining me in this Twitter thread. Remember that I normally cover 2020 presidential candidates so follow me for that!
An anti-KKK protester wearing a red shirt is under arrest for jaywalking. Bystanders tell me the officer in the blue shirt pulled a taser on him while enforcing the arrest. I overheard the cop asking the person inside the car why he was running around in the middle of the street.
Another bystander tells me he recognizes the cop that arrested the guy for jaywalking. Says the cop gave him a ticket for riding a skateboard in an area where it was legal to do so. He pleaded not guilty, case was dismissed. Cop faced no discipline to his knowledge.
Protester released by police. I don't think I've ever -- in my ten years of covering news -- seen anyone arrested with tasers drawn and put in the back of a police car for JAYWALKING. Absolutely bizarre move by @DaytonPolice on what was otherwise a peaceful day.
Yeah. I thought @cityofdayton looked cute and my hotel is nice so I considered coming back but then the cop arrested the teenager for jaywalking and I'm absolutely never coming back to Dayton. I'm sure plenty of people will though, not an ugly city.

... I guess @iamjamiefoxx, @LeoDiCaprio, and @SamuelLJackson deserve to see this (hi guys) since it IS a reference to their movie.
