Grabbed a chat with Lib Dem leader Vince Cable, who was in town today for the ALDE pre-summit meeting with 8 EU PMs. He said they were 'full of congratulations we did so well because we’ve helped build up the Liberal group into a much more powerful position than before'.
Cable said the 8 Liberal PMs are 'very keen Britain remains' and he told them 'there’s every reason to expect that we’re going to stay'. He said he's confident that if the UK needs another extension for a 2nd referendum 'they would seek to accommodate' it.
The Lib Dems' 16 MEPs will be 'very much a part of' the selection of the EU's next top jobs, Cable said. He spoke warmly about Margrethe Vestager, saying 'we will get behind her - she’s very able and has exactly the right approach to taking on the big multinationals'.
Cable said the Lib Dems are now 'a major force' in the Liberal grouping thanks to the EU election result, whereas previously when they had just one MEP he 'didn't have a lot to contribute'. He said EU leaders 'recognise we had a major achievement in the UK'.
