Small break from self imposed exile to Tweet out this amazing thread and to say how closely I identify with it. I had a colleague who jokingly told me I was both incredibly Chinese and incredibly American at the same time. By that they meant, Chinese expect things to 1/n
to get worse and tasting the fruits of bitterness with profound cynicism about how awful people and the government are. However, profoundly American in that I won't stay quiet about these things and in reality make a lot of noise about these things. I take some pride 2/n
in having a colleague I was close with and worked with my entire time say part of me was extremely Chinese. I also share Frankie's father point of view very closely and why I am so disgusted and appalled by the continued apologist narrative and false equivalences I hear 3/n
from people about the threat China poses. I saw one international news outlet columnist this week write about how Trump was wrong to ban Huawei when they should really be put on probation. This is like saying El Chapo should be put in a drug diversionary program. 4/n
The vast majority of DC/NYC still simply do not get the seriousness of the Chinese threat. Don't give me the song and dance about bipartisan change in mood, you simply do not get it. This isn't a government you have a difference of opinion with on trade. This is a government 5/n
that is result of El Chapo and the Terminator having a love child. They have no interest in quibbling over free or fair trade issues. They want to remake the global landscape to become techno-authoritarianism that they control. You want to know why I don't really care 6/n
about Trump? He's temporary. US leaders are made to be temporary. Almost everything argued about Trump are temporary, news flash, issues. China is playing for keeps for the whole board. We are at a point in history it isn't hard to imagine China swinging large number of 7/n
developing and even developed states into their orbit and ushering in a few hundred years of harsh global authoritarianism. That is not a far fetched scenario. Sorry, Trump does not pose remotely that threat. I wish he was doing this for all the right reasons and I wish 8/n
working with allies was a priority but considering the craven money hungry spinelessness that we continue to see from DC about the threat that China poses, I'll take what I can get. One final point: I always try to ask myself how would I view a specific issue if this was 9/n
done by the other party? Basically, trying to apply the standard equally. It never ceases to amaze me what people will criticize about the US and excuse or defend about China. I have nothing but contempt for Jeffrey Sachs. He should not be invited to speak at all about China 10/n
I have only thinly veiled contempt for Huawei research outfits in DC who will write at length about Trump but can't find a single Chinese trade violation if it hit them between the eyes. For all the talk about Huawei and how they maintain intellectual independence, they 11/n
uniquely unable to be able to write anything about the current state of the trade war and Huawei. I guess that is what comes from being a special Huawei research organization. Yes, I will say these outfits are repugnant given the stakes and I won't apologize for it.
