It had to get pretty bleak to break a self-imposed twitter ban...

So here goes, a thread on how the fossil fuel lobby works in this country 1/n
2/ Last Thursday, the WA EPA *recommended* "offsets for proposals with direct emissions above 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent p.a."

The state govt can of course, choose to ignore it. epa.wa.gov.au/media-statemen…
3/ First respondent: APPEA, the national petroleum lobby.

In short, regulation is bad. They want a national, market based scheme. Except for that time they fought to repeal one. appea.com.au/media_release/…
4/ Next up: CMEWA, the WA resources lobby.

They declared that "the guidelines as they stand will negatively impact WA gas projects", risking "thousands of cleaner energy jobs". Note the use of the word *cleaner", not *clean*, big difference. cmewa.com/news-and-event…
5/ Then came the big gun, Woodside CEO Peter Coleman.

It doesn't get much clearer than this: "the move would cost the big players billions of dollars". BINGO! abc.net.au/news/2019-03-0…
6/ Enter the (first) politician, WA Premier Mark McGowan.

"We have had some feedback from some of the major investors that it could impact future projects, and of course I have to create jobs and that is my number one priority". Hmmm, ok. abc.net.au/news/2019-03-0…
7/ Then the second, Matt Canavan.

Canavan slammed the EPA’s new position as “a homemade sledgehammer” against the WA economy... Of course he did. theaustralian.com.au/business/minin…
8/ Then the third, Scott Morrison.

Morrison called it an "unworkable proposal" that would "jeopardise large-scale projects that are vital to our economy". Vital, really? theguardian.com/australia-news…
9/ Then the BCA stepped in.

The BCA never misses a chance to undermine climate policy, but particularly state-based ones. It called the proposal "reckless". bca.com.au/guidelines_ris…
10/ The Kerry Stokes (read Beach Energy) owned West Australian upped the ante, labelling the proposal a "job killer". thewest.com.au/news/environme…
11/ Woodside CEO Peter Coleman continued the assault, this time with an op ed in Saturday's West Australian.

"The Premier must fix the mess" thewest.com.au/opinion/premie…
12/ The West Australian continued, declaring the "heat is on McGowan". That's no idle threat in a one paper state.
thewest.com.au/news/environme…
13/ Then Woodside CEO Peter Coleman perhaps revealed a little too much in today's AFR, acknowledging the importance of "sentiment" in Asia... afr.com/business/energ…
14/ But Coleman's interview with the AFR today was the kicker...

"I have spoken to all of the major resources companies in our sector over the last 24 hours and encouraged them to put their case and our collective case" afr.com/business/woods…
15/ Here's the catch: just 3 months ago, Coleman called for a price on carbon, opining that "our legacy needs to be one that both our children and our grandchildren are proud that their parents gave to them" #SS4C #schoolstrike4climate abc.net.au/news/2018-11-1…
16/ The media, of course, lapped it up...
17/ If this was the reaction to a *recommendation*, we can only imagine the full court press response to *actual policy*.

ICYMI, Australia's annual emissions continue to rise, driven by LNG production... /end theguardian.com/environment/20…
