It’s pretty obvious to me that the President did not personally track the McCain from port to port, identify a moment when their paths may cross, and issue orders to forestall his own temper tantrum. I don’t think that’s the issue here. Do the senior reporters in the press room?
The Nixon-era formulation, “what did the president know and when did he know it?” is a pretty blinkered way of thinking about how a president operates. He creates an environment where his attendants seek to obtain his praise and avoid his wrath.
That environment reportedly led to a dishonorable attempt to hide a Navy ship from his eyes. The issue is what is he going to do about this embarrassment. Is he going to articulate why it was wrong, or vow to change his behavior? Or will he praise the effort as well intentioned?
