Rowena Arshad explains that the GTCS standards need to be a lot more explicit about racism. Otherwise, inclusion and social justice without thinking critically about whiteness is meaningless - @MorayHouseHoS
@MorayHouseHoS Curriculum for Excellence materials need to recognise the positive contributions of BME people in Scotland and need to be anti-racist.
@MorayHouseHoS In Glasgow City Council, 49% of BME teachers felt discrimination due to ethnicity and a barrier to promotion compared to 1.1% of white teachers who felt ethnicity discrimination was a barrier. Whiteness needs to be critically explored and acknowledged.
@MorayHouseHoS There is only 1 acting BME headteacher in all of Scotland. Institutional racism manifests itself through the multiple barriers that BME teachers face when seeking promotion. "I give up" is often the response when BME teachers experience rejections over and over again.
@MorayHouseHoS Increased BME representation at all levels of Scottish education is necessary but not the only solution. Raising the racial literacy of white teachers and developing true white allies is equally important.
@MorayHouseHoS Not every BME teacher is racially conscious either and everybody needs to find a safe space to develop that critical awareness of race and racism.
