This is deeply troubling behavior. It is what I’d call the performance of objectivity, more than anything. If @nytimes is truly worried about an appearance of bias by proximity, will they force reporters off Twitter, perhaps the most partisan space of all?vntyfr.com/00dvLoi
I have more to say about this. It has been many years since I worked on Dr. Maddow’s staff as a segment producer, but I feel confident in stating that it remains among the most journalistically rigorous news shows in production today. This move ignores that truth completely.
The @nytimes makes the argument that reporters can keep going on @Morning_Joe, but not MSNBC’s primetime lineup. How is that consistent? First, “centrism” isn’t objectivity. Second, MJ isn’t centrist. Third, it has more pundit opinions than does TRMS, including from its hosts.
Lastly, I’ll reiterate: how can you allow your reporters to engage freely in an openly partisan space, Twitter, while prohibiting them from appearing on some shows? This just wasn’t well thought through, and speaks even more urgently to the need for a public editor at @nytimes.
