Hey, people who moved to California since the last big earthquake (30 years ago in the Bay Area)! Here's a good thread on earthquake preparedness, esp for vegetarians!
I hosted a disaster preparedness class for my block here in @CityofSunnyvale -- I think the city or @SunnyvaleDPS sponsors a big program? -- and I want to add a couple things I learned.
@CityofSunnyvale @SunnyvaleDPS 1) Buy a gas valve wrench. Fire follows earthquake as sure as fog rolls into the Bay, and this will hopefully limit the damage.
@CityofSunnyvale @SunnyvaleDPS 2) Keep a pair of shoes, extra glasses if you wear them, a flashlight or headlamp, and any essential medications UNDER THE BED. If your windows break, you will cut up your feet trying to get to this stuff.
@CityofSunnyvale @SunnyvaleDPS 3) Check on your neighbors, especially the old and sick! My house is the designated meeting point for my block, but we're supposed to knock on all the doors too.
@CityofSunnyvale @SunnyvaleDPS 4) This guy is a little bit in the prepper direction, which might intimidate you. Let me say that in a lifetime of earthquakes we never got to the point of needing any of this stuff. What we needed most in Loma Prieta, Mt St Helens, Sylmar, etc was WATER and INFORMATION.
@CityofSunnyvale @SunnyvaleDPS Especially anyone likely to be reading this, will need a solar battery charger for your phone and a battery/hand-crank radio.
@CityofSunnyvale @SunnyvaleDPS 5) Take the disaster preparedness training that your town offers! It's free and helps you think clearly in a crisis. You really won't be sorry you did it.
@CityofSunnyvale @SunnyvaleDPS OK that's my bare minimum recommendations. It doesn't need to be some big scary chore, and hopefully it's not gonna turn into a Mad Max movie... but I meet a LOT of new residents who don't have any preparedness, so I wanted to share. ;)
