I'm so tired of all the negativity against #PrideMonth already...

Look. Straight people. We get it. You don't understand why we need our own month. "When is straight pride month?" You ask for the 100th time as if it's clever.

Well sit down and let me explain something to you.
When you consume media -- TV, movies, music, video games -- the vast majority of it is focusing on straight people.

In fact, @glaad found that between 2017-18, only about 6% of the people represented on our TV screens were LGBTQ+

That means the other 94% were straight.
You might say, well only 4.5% of Americans identify as LGBT. That's not that many people.

Well, let's put that into perspective. According to Google, as of yesterday the average US population was 328,900,709. We can even round that down to make the math easier.
So let's say the US has an average population of 300 million.

4.5% of that is 13,500,000.

13.5 million people. That's more than the average population of NYC and Los Angeles combined!

And all those people identify as LGBTQ+
So what does that mean? Well, it means that for one month out of the year, 13.5 million people have decided they want to celebrate who they are. They want to be seen, and heard, and treated with respect, dignity, and LOVE.

It's what every person wants, really.
But when they look around at the world, they only see a small fraction of their experiences being represented. Their stories are not being told.

So much of hate is simply fear. Fear of the unknown. We want to be known. We are your neighbors, your children, your co-workers.
We want to celebrate and be proud of who we are.

As a straight person, you can do that every day, without fear. You are the 94%. Your experiences and stories have been told 1,000 times over.

How about letting someone else get up and talk?
So when is straight pride?
Every damn day.

How about you give us a month where you sit down and listen. 13.5 million stories are waiting to be told.

You might learn something.
