Look. Straight people. We get it. You don't understand why we need our own month. "When is straight pride month?" You ask for the 100th time as if it's clever.
Well sit down and let me explain something to you.
In fact, @glaad found that between 2017-18, only about 6% of the people represented on our TV screens were LGBTQ+
That means the other 94% were straight.
Well, let's put that into perspective. According to Google, as of yesterday the average US population was 328,900,709. We can even round that down to make the math easier.
4.5% of that is 13,500,000.
13.5 million people. That's more than the average population of NYC and Los Angeles combined!
And all those people identify as LGBTQ+
It's what every person wants, really.
So much of hate is simply fear. Fear of the unknown. We want to be known. We are your neighbors, your children, your co-workers.
As a straight person, you can do that every day, without fear. You are the 94%. Your experiences and stories have been told 1,000 times over.
How about letting someone else get up and talk?
Every damn day.
How about you give us a month where you sit down and listen. 13.5 million stories are waiting to be told.
You might learn something.
