(Thread) Hey there: it's the last day of #Pride Month, 50 years after #Stonewall, and there's something I'd like to share. This month has been extremely hard, and today seems appropriate for something I've been scared to do for far too long.
I think a lot about how @BreneBrown defines shame: "the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging – something we've experienced, done, or failed to do makes us unworthy of connection."
Hosting @1A has brought me into the lives of millions of people. I've been honored to meet lots of our fans, many of whom praise me and the work we do. I'm grateful for that, but it's had an unintended side effect that's forced me to reexamine how I live my life.

Don’t talk about #Stonewall50 if you’re not going to support trans ppl.
Don’t celebrate #Stonewall if you’re not going to fight for queer & trans ppl of color.
Don’t claim OUR history if you don’t intend to continue to struggle for freedom & justice for ALL queer & trans folks.
This means supporting sex workers.
This means fighting for disability justice.
This means condemning the prison industrial complex.
This means recognizing cis privilege.
This means no fucking cops & corporations at #Pride.
This means not being content until ALL OF US can live our lives free from racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, ableist, classist, xenophobic, anti-Semitic, Islamaphobic violence in a nation that provides the food, housing, education, & healthcare we need to thrive.

50 years ago today, demonstrators fought back after New York police raided the Stonewall Inn, a refuge for the LGBTQ community.

Known as the #Stonewall uprising, it was led by gay and transgender people of color.

The demonstrations galvanized the modern LGBTQ rights movement.
At the time of the #Stonewall riots:

▪️ No U.S. laws protected gay people from discrimination
▪️ Homosexuality was still classified as a mental disorder
▪️ LGBTQ+ people could be arrested for dancing together, touching or not wearing enough 'gender-appropriate' clothing
It took 50 years for the New York Police Department to apologize for raiding the #Stonewall Inn in 1969 — during which it arrested and beat dozens of patrons and employees — admitting its actions were "discriminatory and oppressive."

2/ In the earliest hours of June 28, 1969, a group of LGBTQ people reached their tipping point. They were peacefully enjoying the evening at the #Stonewall Inn in New York City when police raided the bar and started hauling out the patrons.
3/ No longer willing to take the harassment and discrimination, the LGBTQ individuals at #Stonewall fought back. Their protest lasted six days … and sparked a movement that is still building today. #Pride2019

This doesn't work in a crisis. In the Reagan/Bush years I was getting arrested in protests because my friends--men your age and younger--were dying.
My activism and that of other ACT-UP, Queer Nation and Lavender Menace people like me didn' t allow for politeness.
While I am thrilled that that work we did to save lives & gain rights has allowed you to be married, in the military & run for president, @PeteButtigieg, your not recognizing that many of us do not have white, male or cis privilege is unsettling. #LGBTQ people are still dying.
The trans ban is real. Efforts to roll back healthcare for #LGBTQ people is real. The exponential rise in hate crimes against us--all real. It's essential you recognize that platitudes when black people are being shot, women are having their bodily autonomy revoked won't work.
