THREAD: Righto, let's look at what happened. Firstly, there is no denying the best candidate lost in Peterborough. This isn't sour grapes: @MikeGreeneTBP is a genuine inspiration, a bloke with vision who would've given his heart & soul for the city. Respect to him 🙏
@MikeGreeneTBP Let's start with the positives. We had over 1000 volunteers turn up to help. Absolutely staggering levels of passion. Unpaid. One, Rick, drove 6 hours round trip, he had a spinal injury, was in huge pain, yet drove myself & @Michael_Heaver to our patches & helped leaflet 👊
@MikeGreeneTBP @Michael_Heaver Yesterday we walked until we dropped. We were still taking votes from opposition at 7pm+. So many moving chats on doorsteps. Real people who feel forgotten. There were a few tears (and regular viewers will know I do like to shed a tear on trains, as I am now...) cos we care
@MikeGreeneTBP @Michael_Heaver Here, It's customary to congratulate the victors. But I cannot. Labour fought to the most negative, divisive campaign I've ever seen. I don't recognise the party I grew up with any more. Again, not sour grapes. It's just politics. Victory was all that mattered to them.
@MikeGreeneTBP @Michael_Heaver They threw everything at this seat: Corbyn twice; Thornberry; McDonnell; Abbot; Dawn Butler; Gordon Brown; Ed ruddy Milliband etc. They had data we couldn't match: doors to knock on, votes to drill out. And they won by a mere 680 votes... a cigarette paper victory
@MikeGreeneTBP @Michael_Heaver People are talking about postal vote, etc, but where we must differ from our opponents is that we must not only accept defeat, but learn from it and fight back, stronger. We lost. It's tough. But we will not yield
@MikeGreeneTBP @Michael_Heaver I want to thank you all for your support. We've been on quite a journey together. I'm meeting my mum for lunch. Sometimes a hug from your mum is all you need. I'm in Brussels on Monday for the first time. This is just the beginning. Love to all xx
