Rep. Smith (R-eally?) from Missouri, who apparently visited the Southern Texas border last week, has some lunatic notions about refugees. Latin American mothers do NOT rent out their children for other people to take across the border. WTAF?

But many people, including mothers and young children, are fleeing unimaginable violence, especially in the Northern Triangle. It's been likened by many international agencies as akin to a war zone. Violence against women and children, in particular, is off the charts.

Crowding at detention facilities is happening because ICE & CBP refuse to release asylum seekers who pose no threat to the community, using many alternatives to detention that are available and have proven effective.

Instead, they plan to keep them detained for up to 5 years, even those who came across the border legally. Is it any wonder they've run out of room to put "new arrivals"? How much will this cost taxpayers? How much funneled to for-profit corporations?

Children ARE being kept more than 20 days. Rep. Smith should check out the latest court filing on the Flores case, against Homestead, where fully half the 2000+ children have been there more than 20 days, when they should have been released to family.

If I were one of his constituents, and *I* didn't advocate for more detention, I'd ask @RepJasonSmith if he's received campaign contributions from GEO or CoreCivic--two biggest for-profit immigrant detention center corporations--or if he owns any stock in them.

Just FYI.
