Some on the right will use this story to justify bad policies such as complete refugee bans. Some on the left will ignore it to justify their support for few or no restrictions on who we should let into this country.

But there are real lessons here that should be considered.
Putting aside Trump's original ignorant and bigoted Muslim ban proposal, there is a legitimate discussion to be had specifically about refugees from Syria and a few other war-torn countries.
Accepting Syrian refugees can change those lives, but we can only do so under certain circumstances that prioritize safety and security of Americans. Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly said they could not properly vet refugees from Syria in recent years.
Further, it does little to address the root problem. Most Syrians want their country back, not to become refugees elsewhere.

Past policies have made that prospect unlikely in the near future, but it should still be the ultimate goal.
