A few thoughts on the UN Special Rapporteur @AgnesCallamard’s report:
1. Reading through the report, it doesn’t seem investigative. It seems more prosecutorial in its wording.
2. It holds the CP as guilty until proven otherwise, with no basis in evidence.
3. It gives Turkish authorities too much leeway/credit in the sense that it does not question their hesitation in providing the full recordings either for listening or authentication. 4. When mentioning Saudi statements, it goes out of its way to discredit them ...
by using words such as “alleged” while it does no such thing when mentioning other sources or authorities. 5. It states clearly that the investigation and its findings would not hold in a court of law, but still tells us to trust its findings nonetheless.
6. It admits to the high risk of confirmation bias in the findings, something that it unfortunately finds itself in on numerous occasion.
7. The section about Jamal Kashoggi as a person, while highly moving, is irrelevant & subjective. It does not carry any investigatory weight. It is highly editorialized to invoke sympathy.
All the above and a lot more should make us question the a) fairness of the report given the lack of the full picture and concrete evidence & b) the prejudice of its author.
