1325 is an important debate and differentiator. But those who oppose its repeal may have done their homework. It makes entry a misdemeanor, not a felony. It also sets a baseline for a nation’s enforcement capabilities against unlawful entry. Just to set the scene accurately. 1/
The Trump Administration has abused all of its immigration authorities and flagrantly violated laws. But Dems whose baseline is criminal misdemeanor can believe both that enforcement should be reserved for serious criminal behavior while also noting that the criminal code 2/
can serve as important deterrent. Obama policies were able to make that distinction. In other words, I can be against repeal and for strong enforcement without defending Trumps policies. Which is where I am. And I did homework. 3/
I write this knowing I may not align with where much of the party is but we buy into the false dichotomy — Trump policies or open borders — that Republicans are selling if we claim that 1325 is root of all evil. Just my thoughts as response to Castro’s thoughtful contribution.4/4
