“The greatest loss of my retirement was losing my team,” writes @AbbyWambach. She explains: “Our time on the US Women’s National Team turned us into more than just winners. We turned each other into better friends, citizens, and human beings.” amazon.com/WOLFPACK-Toget… #USWNT
“Every good thing that has come to me—and the women I respect—has happened when we dared to venture off the path” - @AbbyWambach, from “Wolfpack” #TuesdayReading
My favorite story from @AbbyWambach’s “Wolfpack” comes after retirement, when she’s coaching her 10-year-old daughter’s soccer team — cc: @alexmorgan13

This is important: I hope more male footballers join @EkdalAlbin to make the sport less homophobic and more supportive of male players to come out. #LGBTQ #Pride 🏳️‍🌈 h/t @Kibalcic
t bears remembering that the women’s game has a history of openly gay players that the men’s game has yet to catch up with, as I mention here google.com/amp/s/www.nyti… #LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈
And here’s a thread I posted after the women’s World Cup that looks into the stark difference in the # of openly gay/bi players in the women’s game vs the men’s #LGBTQ

I just rode my bike by City Hall where the clean up is underway, but glory is in thr air. What a great day for women athletes, for young girls who want to play with all their hearts. #USWNT simply the best. Better than all the rest. buzzfeednews.com/article/gabrie…
Just want to say I’ve not seen so many girls with their moms, aunts, cousins walking around lower Manhattan with wide grins. #USWNTParade has brought immense crowds and lifted innumerable spirits!
This was the #July4th parade America really needed, down Broadway’s Canyon of Heroes and Heroines with a million people along the way, cheering, screaming, feeling the power of women who play to win. huffpost.com/entry/us-women…

The U.S. soccer team refuses to be demure, ladylike, or apologetic. No wonder conservative pundits are hopping mad. ⚽️⚽️⚽️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 salon.com/2019/07/09/wom…
Fox News’s Jesse Watters, for instance, was lecturing the #USWNT for failing to treat Trump, who calls women “pigs” and “dogs”, with respect. This expectation that women play nice with abusive men is pure sexism.
Conservatives also flat-out lied about Rapinoe, falsely accusing her of “stomping” on the flag. The homophobia and misogyny is naked.

In the past couple hours Donald Trump has posted three tweets congratulating himself for various things, yet he still hasn’t congratulated the #USWNT for winning the championship. We all know it’s because the team’s stars don’t like him. He’s the definition of a sore loser.
Five minutes after I posted this, Trump suddenly tweeted out congratulations to the team. Funny how that works.

Live tweeting this game in the spirit of my analysis of the Grammys and Oscars (generally I focus on minor issues/gossip that cater to a small subset of followers but show an overall appreciation for the entire enterprise). Also I have a favorite team this time. #USWNT 1/

Twitter sent me a notice this morning about a post that had offended some users.

In response, Twitter told me they were marking the offending tweet “sensitive” so no one would come upon it without warning and be shocked by my message.

My content was THAT upsetting.

The tweet in question...

The one Twitter marked as “sensitive”...

The one people were upset about and Twitter censored...

It was this one. For real. This one. About Megan Rapinoe.

Hey Twitter, your algorithm sucks. Your moderation sucks. Your censorship sucks.

You know who doesn’t suck?

Megan Rapinoe. AKA @mPinoe.

She’s a purple-haired lesbian goddess of American soccer.

Don’t censor genius. Celebrate it.

Women athletes don't have to do anything but be athletes
And objects of adoration.

On #MeganRapinoe: "An essential rebel: a defiant woman refusing to play by the antiquated be-cute-and-courteous rules that make many men feel better about female athletes." washingtonpost.com/sports/dcunite…

I'm sitting at the USA-Curacao soccer match next to a severely inebriated gentleman from Bethlehem, PA. I think, I am going to live tweet his ramblings. Any objections?
He has made at least a dozen attempts to pronounce my name.
"Is it OK if I call you Slav?"
"I mean, you are almost there, man. Just one more sound."
He tries, fails, then settles on the entirely different approach and attempts to call me Slavan.
2 minutes later, he's forgotten it
He has just welcomed me to America. I have told him I've lived here for 28 years. Which is only 5 years less than he.
"So, wait, you came here during the Gulf War Era?"
I didn't know it was an era.

Will have live comments for my twitter friends. Tune in 3pm Eastern, that's like 8 am in California. #USWNT
Temperatures in France are brutal today. Local game time s/b around 9pm. Hopefully some cooling by then. Game is in Paris.

With France coming off a 120 minute extra time game against Brazil, US coach Ellis would be smart to tactically take advantage of the superior depth of the US, but not get too experimental with starters. Fresh legs for second half substitutes can wear Les Bleues down.

I really don’t enjoy matches that are just goal galore against an underdog. There is no joy or beauty or anything to be gained #USATHA #FIFAWWC
That was a horrible display - absolutely no reason for players of such stature in #USWNT to be acting like that over 9th, 10th, 11th goal. And I say that as a feminist who says YES YOU DESERVE ATTENTION YES BE BOLD AND HAVE EGO. Come on. That was awful. #USATHA #FIFAWWC
And thing is the #USWNT is fighting for equal pay & resources with their country’s men’s team. And for inequalities at play there, same & more exist with #THA vs #USA. If US women’s team are denied equal pay & resources, imagine the obstacles that Thai women’s team fave #FIFAWWC

We all get older. It’s an unavoidable fact. Sports fans are no exception. We grow up and we grow old. Unfortunately, so do our heroes. The life of a sports fan, measured by their heroes, has a few major milestones that mark our cycle. #mlb #nba #nfl #nhl #wnba #usmnt #uswnt 1/17
#1 - Establishing a Hero
Think back: Once you were the starry-eyed child. You watched on the television or, hopefully, someone took you to a game. There you were amazed by what that one guy or girl did. How can he run so fast? Did you see that pass? 2/17
Someone did something that made you take notice. You were amazed, in awe. Maybe it was Sandy Koufax's control, Mike Schmidt's power, Walter Payton's finesse, or Sue Bird's control of the court. Something made you become a sports fan and you wouldn't want that to change. 3/17
