Over half way through the year and, at long last, Alberta Q1 2019 opioid reporting is made available. Let’s have a look at the stats shall we?

alberta.ca/opioid-reports…
“There continues to be a high number of accidental fentanyl related poisoning deaths in the province,
however, the number in the most recent quarter is comparatively less than the previous.”

Sounds like the harm reduction and overdose response initiatives are helping.
This begs the question, if we are in fact seeing a decline in overdose deaths, why are we pausing these services in communities that clearly still need them?

Now is not the time defund, delay, or discontinue supervised consumption services.
“This means, 1.5 individuals a day are dying from an accidental fentanyl related poisoning in 2019.”

Compared to 2 per day in 2018, some may find this reassuring. Please keep in mind, this is still a crisis that warrants immediate action.

Every #overdose death is preventable.
We run the risk of complacency after seeing a report like this—is one quarter enough to draw such heavy conclusions?

Nope. Not in the slightest. That is not how public health decisions are made.

Also, why aren’t we tracking non-fentanyl overdoses anymore?
Are the numbers down because of effective intervention? Or are they down because we are running out of people to die from overdose?

Think on that for a second—it’s a tragic possibility.
Look more closely at the stats.

The smaller communities are so unpredictable—last year #medicinehat had ZERO deaths in their first quarter. They ended 2018 with their worst year yet.

Overdose deaths come in surges.
Overdose heat mapping from #Calgary.

Doesn’t it look like this city could benefit from a mobile SCS? Maybe we shouldn’t be pausing funding to an already equipped mobile consumption service when the data clearly indicates need.
Let’s recap with this wonderful graphic provided by your Alberta #UCP government.

“Supervised consumption services
save lives by providing people supervision while they use their own drugs, naloxone and emergency care in the event of an overdose, and access to health care.”
#Calgary: 899 overdoses reversed
#Lethbridge: 1813 overdose reversed
#Edmonton: 488 overdoses reversed
#GrandPrairie: 16 overdoses reversed
#RedDeer: 347 overdoses reversed

Supervised consumption services save lives. Full stop.
