Let me be the first to concede that we can’t take too much away from this poll. But one thing it does suggest is that using the DMV as a stand-in for forms of incompetence and inefficiency that are unique to government may no longer be a very effective tactic. /1
The DMV and the Post Office have long been employed as symbols of the failure and even the corruption of public goods. But many people find greater and more malevolent incompetence, inefficiency, and cruelty when they interact with the corporate world. /2
This critique of public goods goes back a long way. Here is Minnesota's Republican Senator David Durenberger in 1991 denigrating all manner of publicly financed institutions. /3
