"It’s in the long-term interests of conservatism" to defeat Trump lest conservatism be "irredeemably tarnished" but I'll vote for him unless the Democrats take stances that suit me, strikes me as an incoherent claim.

The emerging position among the Never Trump pundits seems to be that he represents an ethical disaster who is trashing conservative principles but I'll reluctantly vote for him unless the Democratic Party moves to the right.
Paraphrasing a tweet by Sen. Brian Schatz, @DouthatNYT wrote, "It’s a national emergency, join our unity government; also we offer you nothing and we’re moving full speed to the left." But If Trump is as big a threat as the Never Trumpers claim, removing him is hardly "nothing."
As I wrote at the time: I'm not sure why saying, with your help, a narcissistic, incompetent, cruel, racist, accused rapist will no longer be president is offering "nothing." That seems like quite a substantial benefit.
