Means another summit - new name, new #EUCO
There's a remorseless logic here.
1st Weber, lead spitzen needs to be killed off. S&D and ALDE MEPs don't back him as principle of the thing as they should if serious...
2nd Timmermans, the 2nd spitzen for S&D. EPP won't back him 'cos he's not one of them, hammering final nail in spitzen coffin. Takes a summit to kill him off and float some new options who did not stand as spitzen on party lists
If Timmermans fades (and how serious was it really) then the ludicrous spitzen idea as it stands is dead. Rejoice. Only lingering remnant will be need for a name to be openly touted before next #EUCO on 15 July
In my minds eye (giving them far too much credit) I can hear Merkel telling Macron, 'mon pote, this is how we knock it on the head...'

Pearl clutchers should note that MEPs turning their backs to Ode to Joy dirge is nothing new. There was same faux outrage in 2014
Also that those protesting the exclusion of separatist Catalan MEPs refused to stand for the anthem, which has an odious (geddit) past
The official arrangement of Ode to Joy is different from Beethoven's original and was by Herbert von Karajan, who had a tainted past as a card carrying Nazi
It was the official national anthem of racist Rhodesia. It was played to celebrate Hitler’s birthday

There's talk of summit on afternoon/evening of 30 June to finalise after a bit of fixing in the sidelines of G20. EPP for EC prez, liberals for council is one of the spun permutations - I don't buy it yet
Apparently, European Parliament does not have to choose its president at the first session - it can appoint longest serving MEP as an interim in the post

So ahead of EU leaders meeting tomorrow, time for some good old fashioned Brussels gossip (analysis?) on EU top jobs. Short thread of where things stand. Bottom line: process is stuck - in EP; with "rapporteurs"; and with @eucopresident bilateral consultations with MS 1/
No deal on @EU_Commission Pres this week. A second #EUCO on 30 June now likely to give leaders another shot. Council desperate to strike a deal before EP chooses its President beginning July. Why? Bc if EP goes first, its decision will constrain room for manoeuvre among leaders 2
For eg, one theory is that Ska Keller (Head of German Greens) & @guyverhofstadt will split EP Presidency among themselves (2.5 years each). But this would kill @vestager chances (as both her & @guyverhofstadt hail from lib group). "The first mover has the advantage" says one 3/

Good thread. Here a few rebuttals: 1) Despite what pol parties have said publicly, in private there's little/no support in EP for Weber or Spitz process generally. 2) Socialists & ALDE are signalling they won't support Weber & there's no way for EPP to build a majority w/out them
So 3) It's not the Council that will kill Spitz - it will happen itself by virtue of fact EP won't be able to coalesce around a candidate. So fallout for leaders will be limited - Spitz dies in EP not Council. 4) With no name to consider, I hear Tusk will test names on Sun night
5) This is where Barnier's name surfaces - he's EPP, so their "win" still acknowledged; he has support of French & critically 6) he'll easily carry absolute majority in EP (where he is loved across the board for the love he - smartly & purposely - showed MEPs through Brexit)

NEW: updated draft conclusions: 'EUCO agrees to an extension to 22 May, provided WA is approved by the HoC next week. If the WA is not approved by the HoC next week, EUCO agrees to an extension until 12 April, expects UK to indicate a way forward for the consideration of EUCO'
The wording in the conclusions is very clever. I am told it was driven by France & Germany.
A senior EU official tells me that on the basis of what has been decided, "in agreement with PM May":

- either WA approved by UK MPs next week, then orderly Brexit on 22 May

or

- 12 April disorderly Brexit, or request for another extension

NEW: #EUCO Brexit draft conclusions state: ‘The European Council commits to agreeing to an extension until *22 May 2019*, provided the WA is approved by the HoC next week. Given that The UK does not intend to hold elections to the EP, no extension is possible beyond that date'
The conclusions will also 'approve the instrument relating to the WA and the joint statement supplementing the PD agreed between the European Commission and the UK in Strasbourg on 11 March 2019'
The leaders will also "take note" of Theresa May's letter.
